Dear invited guests,
Life of an academic is often two folded. On the one side, there is the
professional life and its day-to-day engagement. On the other side, lies the personal
life with its wonders, achievements and fulfilments. When the biggest questions of
life are asked, these two coalesce into one illuminating perspective.
The Last Lecture is an opportunity to engage the speakers with these concepts and gives a platform to perform a lecture as if it would be one’s last. A lecture where it is no longer only the subject matter that is at stake, but the very core of one’s own existence and meaning derived thereof. The last lecture poses a question "what would you say, if it would be your last chance to talk to a body of students?" The answers that have been given have inspired, amazed and moved the audience following the lectures.
The lecture will be held 24th of February 2011 in DZ1 at 14.00
This time Randall Lesaffer, Dean of the Tilburg Law School and Professor in Legal History, will shed light on his life as a historian who got lost in the 20th century and was found again in the 21st. It is the history of his awakening as a person and a historian and of his close but somewhat unrewarding relation with Machiavelli, that great 16th-century Italian politician turned historian. As history is about telling stories, he will give us his seven historical accounts from which he thinks a great deal of wisdom can be drawn.
If you wish to join us to this wonderful occasion, we ask you to register by sending an e-mail to info@extramuros.nl
For the first time in the Last Lecture history we also broadcast the lecture LIVE online.
Kind regards,
The Last Lecture Committee
